“Hard-hitting, morally complex, and highly entertaining.”
Peter Swanson, author of All the beautiful lies
“The Cold Summer is a masterpiece.”
Eugenia Rico, author of El beso del canguro
“The complex structure of Carofiglio’s narrative, with multiple structural and social parallels at the local and national level, contrasting criminal and civil worlds, and personal events in the lives of the characters, serves to reinforce the emphasis of the novel on the crucial role of structure in human life. But it is ultimately the ethical and sometimes contemplative Fenoglio who holds the whole novel together. His humanity holds out hope for some respite from the violence and corruption that lie behind all the story’s events. As he himself says of his role, what he does (and who he is) «gives meaning to chaos.»” LA Review of Books
Evening Standard‘s pick for one of the best crime novels of the month (October 2018)
The summer of 1992 is a cold one in southern Italy. The chilling Mafia violence currently sweeping Sicily has spread to Puglia, much to the consternation of Pietro Fenoglio, a local officer of the Carabinieri.
Fenoglio, recently jilted by his wife, must simultaneously deal with his personal crisis and the gang wars raging around Bari. The case is stalled until a Mafia member, suspected of killing the son of a rival mobster, decides to collaborate.
The brutal killings are stopped but the mystery of the boy’s murder must still be solved, leading Fenoglio into a world of deep moral ambiguity, where the investigators are hard to distinguish from the investigated.

Gianrico Carofiglio’s writing masterclass on Repubblica.it
“Hard-hitting, morally complex, and highly entertaining. A fascinating look at the Italian mafia, and the police who battled them, in the early 1990s.”
Peter Swanson, author of All the beautiful lies
“The Cold Summer is a masterpiece, a novel that not only tells us about Italy, but also about the modern world. A novel that should be mandatory in school, to fight against the epidemic of corruption and mediocrity”.
“The author occupies a niche similar to Erle Stanley Gardner and John Grisham.”
Times Literary Supplement
“As exacting and contemplative as any crime writer I can think of.”
Washington Post
“Every character in Carifiglio’s fiction has a story to tell and they are always worth hearing.”
Daily Mail
“Carofiglio raises the standard for crime fiction. His stories are both literary and gritty.”
Jeffery Deaver
“Hard-boiled and sun-dried in equal parts.”
Financial Times
“The Cold Summer (L’estate fredda) is written very close to the events of that chilly, dangerous season, and marks, Carofiglio tells Publishing Perspectives, one of the few times he has found himself interested in delivering a message with his fiction: organized crime is not inevitable, not unbeatable.”
Porter Anderson, Publishing Perspectives (read all)
“Fenoglio is a sensitive, polished figure who has managed to keep his idealism intact in a career meant to break it.”
Kirkus Reviews
“A fine police procedural.”
